Monday 07th March 2011 SESSION DIARIES FROM JAMES JESSOP

Today begins the second week of the mentor sessions, but looking back, we’ve received some nice updates from the first session. UK mentor James Jessop and winning artist Oskar Rink had a great time in East London and we thought we’d share one of his reports from the studio:

Hi Art Stars,

Day two, Oskar arrived at the studio at 10.30am and applied a final coat of white primer on the star. Whilst it was drying Oskar cut the foam board into hundreds of thin strips. This was then pinned carefully together into a cell like structure and then pinned to the star with very small pins.

12.30 went for lunch and headed to the Fiesta cafe on Roman Road. Not as exciting as the first day adventure to shop for materials where we met ROA from Belgium in Chrome and Black shopping for white spray paint…10 minutes before we were admiring his giant mural by Atlantis whilst collecting some primer - but still fun. Real East End vibes.

On the way back Oskar picked up a few items from pound land to add to the star. The best item, a police helicopter that will be sprayed white. We recommenced work on the star at 1.30pm, from there we began a Marathon session working on the star non-stop until 10pm late in the evening, when food arrives.

During the session Oskar adds further to the structure with hundreds more thin strips. I cut polystyrene into four large blocks to sit on top of the star that Oskar will cover the next day with the buildings.

That’s the day two update.

Cheerz,

James

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

In January 2010, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren commissioned over 40 of Europe’s most exciting young contemporary artists to customise stars made from the finest American denim.

With the iconic Stars and Stripes flag for inspiration, each young artist was tasked with creating something totally unique: beyond the shapes and sizes of the Art Stars, the only limit was their imaginations...

Each Art Star will appear in a Polo Jeans Co. store, before joining a public exhibition in London in late 2010.

Contemporary art and fashion aficionados will have the opportunity to own one of these exclusive Art Stars.

All the stars created will be brought together in a public exhibition in London in late 2010 and auctioned in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people with cancer between the ages of 13-24.

Teenagers don’t stop being teenagers because they have cancer, which is why Teenage Cancer Trust builds specialist units in NHS hospitals, staffed by teenage cancer specialists.

These units are designed for and by young people and aim to give teenage cancer patients the very best chance of a positive outcome whilst being as close as possible to normal life.

State-of-the-art facilities keep patients occupied during long, and often grueling stays, whilst bringing teenagers with cancer together so they can support each other.
