Friday 04th March 2011 MENTORING SESSIONS - WEEK ONE RECAP

Looking back, the scope of work from the first week of the Mentoring Sessions involved a variety of very different approaches. From paper in Esther Barfred’s and Oskar Rink’s stars, to detailed painting and illustration in Malcolmo’s and Karolina Liszewska’s stars, to collage and montage techniques with found imagery in Robin Cracknell’s and Olga Migliaressi Phoca’s stars.

It was nice to see how the Art Stars developed from their original concepts initially sent, as it seemed that the actual engagement of working with the star canvas and their mentors genuinely effected the artworks.

We were pleased to also find out that collaboration between the artists and their mentors was a possibility, as Case and his winning artist Karolina combined their artistic skills to create a beautiful mix between photo-realistic painting and the craft of sewing.

We also received great daily diary updates from the mentors giving us a little insight to the sessions.

Hvass&Hannibal wrote to us:

Day 1:
"Esther came to the studio at 10 and immediately started working. Over the weekend she has been experimenting with different folding techniques. In her initial sketch she wanted to work with 3D folding, origami style, but we found out that it wouldn't fit into the crate for the star, so we discussed a different approach, of flat folding or weaving of paper.

Esther is working with an origami folding technique that we have used earlier for a project, where it's possible to make new shapes out of many small folded pieces. She's experimenting with colors and printing shades on the paper, to make an illusion of depth on the otherwise flat paper."

We will be filling you in on Week Two soon, but check out the in-studio shots now.

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

In January 2010, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren commissioned over 40 of Europe’s most exciting young contemporary artists to customise stars made from the finest American denim.

With the iconic Stars and Stripes flag for inspiration, each young artist was tasked with creating something totally unique: beyond the shapes and sizes of the Art Stars, the only limit was their imaginations...

Each Art Star will appear in a Polo Jeans Co. store, before joining a public exhibition in London in late 2010.

Contemporary art and fashion aficionados will have the opportunity to own one of these exclusive Art Stars.

All the stars created will be brought together in a public exhibition in London in late 2010 and auctioned in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people with cancer between the ages of 13-24.

Teenagers don’t stop being teenagers because they have cancer, which is why Teenage Cancer Trust builds specialist units in NHS hospitals, staffed by teenage cancer specialists.

These units are designed for and by young people and aim to give teenage cancer patients the very best chance of a positive outcome whilst being as close as possible to normal life.

State-of-the-art facilities keep patients occupied during long, and often grueling stays, whilst bringing teenagers with cancer together so they can support each other.

Visit www.teenagecancertrust.org to find out more.
