Wednesday 23rd February 2011 THREE'S A CHARM: JAMES JESSOP'S MENTORING SESSIONS

Three winning artists will start arriving to the studio of mentor and painter James Jessop this week to complete their ART STAR. Although all of the artists typically use a range of mediums in their practices - from painting, to illustration, to photography - they all will be pushing the limits of their work and experimenting with new forms.

For the first week, Oskar Rink, whose background is in illustration and fashion design, will be developing her new body of work in paper sculptures to build a massive city structure on top of the star which is inspired by the architecture in some of the United States’ finest cities. These paper sculptures are a new venture for Rink as she moves away from drawing and illustration.

Vijay Patel, like James Jessop, has a background in painting, though recently has begun experimenting in collaboration with the Institute of Neuroesthetics, University College London to explore changes in visual perception to light and sculpture. Patel’s ART STAR was inspired by his time spent in New York, as he explains:

“During this time I became interested in the topography and geometry of the city, architecture (particularly that of the 1960’s and 70’s)… The continuous lighting of buildings and signposts is an important feature of Manhattan and an aspect I wanted to incorporate into my design. My star contains lighting underneath and also lighting projected onto denim. This multi-colour design is a response to my experiences of New York City, photographs I have taken and responding to other artists’ interpretation of the city.”

For the last week of the studio sessions, photographer Lyndsay Martin will explore her concepts in 3-D form, looking to a domestic source of inspiration. Martin’s proposal was inspired by vintage imagery, taken specifically from wallpaper, and connecting with the material through layering hand-painted elements and embroidery.

The ART STARS project has sparked new ideas for these three winning artists and we’re intrigued to see the results from Jessop’s studio sessions!

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

In January 2010, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren commissioned over 40 of Europe’s most exciting young contemporary artists to customise stars made from the finest American denim.

With the iconic Stars and Stripes flag for inspiration, each young artist was tasked with creating something totally unique: beyond the shapes and sizes of the Art Stars, the only limit was their imaginations...

Each Art Star will appear in a Polo Jeans Co. store, before joining a public exhibition in London in late 2010.

Contemporary art and fashion aficionados will have the opportunity to own one of these exclusive Art Stars.

All the stars created will be brought together in a public exhibition in London in late 2010 and auctioned in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people with cancer between the ages of 13-24.

Teenagers don’t stop being teenagers because they have cancer, which is why Teenage Cancer Trust builds specialist units in NHS hospitals, staffed by teenage cancer specialists.

These units are designed for and by young people and aim to give teenage cancer patients the very best chance of a positive outcome whilst being as close as possible to normal life.

State-of-the-art facilities keep patients occupied during long, and often grueling stays, whilst bringing teenagers with cancer together so they can support each other.
