Monday 21st February 2011 THE WINNING ARTISTS WITH ANNIE P. LOOK TO THE STREET FOR INSPIRATION

All-round star Annie P. will be welcoming two artists into her studio this week who will both be calling on her impressively diverse knowledge of fine art and design sensibilities to help them develop and realise their concepts.

Winning artist Olga Migliaressi Phoca, who works primarily in photography, has been inspired by the street culture of New York City for the creation of her star. She has looked into her archive of photographic imagery from when she was living in NYC and will be weaving a variety of the screen-printed snapshots along with other fabrics and paint to convey the atmosphere and high energy of street culture:

"The star is comprised of a selection of raw street images I had shot while living in New York, in combination to elements that reference the classic American culture (such as the American flag, the American dollar, and the iconic I LOVE NY logo.)… The star represents hope, desire & high expectations."

During the second week, graphic designer Tomy Karaiskos has taken inspiration from the essence and experience of the female living within the city centre. Creating the ART STAR from paper, fabric, adhesive tape, Karaiskos explains his concept:

"Graffiti on the walls, reflections on the pavement, dirt on the streets, grey clouds in the sky, red stripes on a flag. She enjoys the noise and crazy rhythm of the metropolis… Loves feeling alive, feeling young."

Annie P. told ART STARS she was really looking forward to seeing the winner announcements and welcoming the artists into her studio – and we’re equally eager to see how this high energy translates to the finished artwork after the studio sessions!

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

In January 2010, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren commissioned over 40 of Europe’s most exciting young contemporary artists to customise stars made from the finest American denim.

With the iconic Stars and Stripes flag for inspiration, each young artist was tasked with creating something totally unique: beyond the shapes and sizes of the Art Stars, the only limit was their imaginations...

Each Art Star will appear in a Polo Jeans Co. store, before joining a public exhibition in London in late 2010.

Contemporary art and fashion aficionados will have the opportunity to own one of these exclusive Art Stars.

All the stars created will be brought together in a public exhibition in London in late 2010 and auctioned in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people with cancer between the ages of 13-24.

Teenagers don’t stop being teenagers because they have cancer, which is why Teenage Cancer Trust builds specialist units in NHS hospitals, staffed by teenage cancer specialists.

These units are designed for and by young people and aim to give teenage cancer patients the very best chance of a positive outcome whilst being as close as possible to normal life.

State-of-the-art facilities keep patients occupied during long, and often grueling stays, whilst bringing teenagers with cancer together so they can support each other.
