Monday 17th January 2011 DESIGN AND COLLABORATION: Artists Hvass & Hannibal at the Danish School of Media and Journalism

ART STARS 2011 Talks Programme continues this week from Greece to Copenhagen with an exhilarating discussion from the 2011 Scandinavian mentors Hvass&Hannibal.

Hvass&Hannibal is a young Danish design duo comprised of childhood friends Nan Na Hvass & Sofie Hannibal. Pronounced in their native tongue, their company name sounds like "what's up Hannibal?" and the answer to this particular question is a lot!

Over the last two years Hvass&Hannibal have not only exhibited their work in galleries across Europe, they have crafted critically acclaimed record sleeves, a collection of limited and sought after hand printed T-shirts and posters, a psychedelic art installation, photographs and photoart, and a gigantic vivid mural at the popular Copenhagen venue VEGA – just to name a few.

The Copenhagen-based duo is best known for creating striking works such as silkscreen prints, wooden sculptures and offset posters that beautifully and tangibly express data sets like the probability theory or the registration of natural phenomena. Adding their own sensitivity to hard statistics, the multimedia designers imagine the data in bold colours, sometimes playing on traditional geometric shapes and at other times turning to more abstract imagery.

The talk will take place on Friday 21st January at the Danish School of Media and Journalism, which is Northern Europe’s largest centre for education in journalism, photojournalism, graphic design, interactive design, creative communication, TV and media directing, and media production and management.

The acclaimed university was formed in 2008 by a merger between the Graphics Art Institute of Denmark and the Danish School of Journalism. The merger of the educational establishments means that the school now covers the whole media sector and provides design and content to the media industry, as well as giving students and teachers the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience of the media sector across specialist groups.

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

In January 2010, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren commissioned over 40 of Europe’s most exciting young contemporary artists to customise stars made from the finest American denim.

With the iconic Stars and Stripes flag for inspiration, each young artist was tasked with creating something totally unique: beyond the shapes and sizes of the Art Stars, the only limit was their imaginations...

Each Art Star will appear in a Polo Jeans Co. store, before joining a public exhibition in London in late 2010.

Contemporary art and fashion aficionados will have the opportunity to own one of these exclusive Art Stars.

All the stars created will be brought together in a public exhibition in London in late 2010 and auctioned in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people with cancer between the ages of 13-24.

Teenagers don’t stop being teenagers because they have cancer, which is why Teenage Cancer Trust builds specialist units in NHS hospitals, staffed by teenage cancer specialists.

These units are designed for and by young people and aim to give teenage cancer patients the very best chance of a positive outcome whilst being as close as possible to normal life.

State-of-the-art facilities keep patients occupied during long, and often grueling stays, whilst bringing teenagers with cancer together so they can support each other.
