Just one month after the kick-off of the Art Stars studio sessions, the completed works will be unveiled in several of Europe’s most exciting cities. This showcase of sixteen completed stars will be exhibited in conjunction with some very exciting events to celebrate the 2011 Art Stars project dedicated to young artists and designers.

Beginning the 21st of March, UK artist Seif Alhassani’s star entitled, The Business, will be one of the first artworks displayed at the Maison de Bonneterie in Amsterdam. Seif’s dazzling take ...

  2. Wednesday 16th March 2011 The Art Stars video of the studio sessions is now online

As the winners were preparing to create their stars just a few short weeks ago, here at Art Stars, we were also gearing up to capture the magic.

During the course of 14 days, we visited the studios of seven mentors and their 16 visiting winning artists in cities across Europe. There was a tremendous amount of creativity and passion that went into creating these artworks, but we didn't want the experience of making them to go unseen either.

From London to Athens, we ...

  3. Thursday 10th March 2011 The Week Two Round-Up

Last week, we saw an impressive amount of experimentation as the ideas of the winning artists from the Art Stars competition took form.

In the second week of the Mentoring Sessions, many of the winning artists have been working with strong design aesthetics and producing challenging, technical endeavours.

From Inga Greve Klemensen’s Nordic inspired interactive star, to Pablo Salinas’ duo exposure of the Art Star’s skin, we have seen artists deconstruct and build new forms within and outside of the star-shaped canvases as ...

  4. Monday 07th March 2011 SESSION DIARIES FROM JAMES JESSOP

Today begins the second week of the mentor sessions, but looking back, we’ve received some nice updates from the first session. UK mentor James Jessop and winning artist Oskar Rink had a great time in East London and we thought we’d share one of his reports from the studio:

    Hi Art Stars,

Day two, Oskar arrived at the studio at 10.30am and applied a final coat of white primer on the star. Whilst it was drying Oskar cut the foam board into hundreds ...

  5. Friday 04th March 2011 MENTORING SESSIONS - WEEK ONE RECAP

Looking back, the scope of work from the first week of the Mentoring Sessions involved a variety of very different approaches. From paper in Esther Barfred’s and Oskar Rink’s stars, to detailed painting and illustration in Malcolmo’s and Karolina Liszewska’s stars, to collage and montage techniques with found imagery in Robin Cracknell’s and Olga Migliaressi Phoca’s stars.

It was nice to see how the Art Stars developed from their original concepts initially sent, as it seemed that the actual engagement of working ...

  6. Thursday 24th February 2011 INTO THE FOLD - ART STARS WINNER ESTHER BARFRED

After three long days experimenting with different origami and 3D folding techniques in a variety of paper types, winning artist Esther Barfred has finally found the preferred method for creating her ART STAR.

She worked with mentors Hvass&Hannibal to find the right weaving technique – one they both used in a previous project – but not before experimenting with a variety of colors and introducing printed shading and spray paint to form the right illusion of depth on the flat surface of the paper.

  7. Wednesday 23rd February 2011 THREE'S A CHARM: JAMES JESSOP'S MENTORING SESSIONS

Three winning artists will start arriving to the studio of mentor and painter James Jessop this week to complete their ART STAR. Although all of the artists typically use a range of mediums in their practices - from painting, to illustration, to photography - they all will be pushing the limits of their work and experimenting with new forms.

For the first week, Oskar Rink, whose background is in illustration and fashion design, will be developing her new body of work in paper sculptures to ...

  8. Monday 21st February 2011 ART STARS MENTOR STUDIO SESSIONS KICK OFF!

Starting on Monday, artists across Europe are being welcomed into their paired mentor’s studio to begin working with the 3-dimensional, denim-covered star.

Judges Francesca Gavin, Cedar Lewisohn, and Pedro Alonso selected a wide range of artists’ proposals in various mediums just a few short weeks ago. Now in London, Paris, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Athens and Madrid, each artist will have just one week to tackle some truly challenging proposals and realise their initial ideas with the help and assistance of a mentor from the 2010 ART ...

  9. Monday 21st February 2011 THE WINNING ARTISTS WITH ANNIE P. LOOK TO THE STREET FOR INSPIRATION

All-round star Annie P. will be welcoming two artists into her studio this week who will both be calling on her impressively diverse knowledge of fine art and design sensibilities to help them develop and realise their concepts.

Winning artist Olga Migliaressi Phoca, who works primarily in photography, has been inspired by the street culture of New York City for the creation of her star. She has looked into her archive of photographic imagery from when she was living in NYC and will be weaving ...

  10. Friday 18th February 2011 Alexone's winning artists literally get moving

Parisian artist and ART STAR mentor Alëxone will welcome artists David Addison and Matthew Nevin into his studio for the Art Stars sessions to create two very different artworks from their star-shaped canvases.

As expected, each artist’s proposal is unique in its own right, but its clear that they all refuse to let their work remain static – either by showing imagery as a mural in motion from the street to an indoor gallery or space, to literally working in performance and experimental film.

    Artist ...

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

In January 2010, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren commissioned over 40 of Europe’s most exciting young contemporary artists to customise stars made from the finest American denim.

With the iconic Stars and Stripes flag for inspiration, each young artist was tasked with creating something totally unique: beyond the shapes and sizes of the Art Stars, the only limit was their imaginations...

Each Art Star will appear in a Polo Jeans Co. store, before joining a public exhibition in London in late 2010.

Contemporary art and fashion aficionados will have the opportunity to own one of these exclusive Art Stars.

All the stars created will be brought together in a public exhibition in London in late 2010 and auctioned in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people with cancer between the ages of 13-24.

Teenagers don’t stop being teenagers because they have cancer, which is why Teenage Cancer Trust builds specialist units in NHS hospitals, staffed by teenage cancer specialists.

These units are designed for and by young people and aim to give teenage cancer patients the very best chance of a positive outcome whilst being as close as possible to normal life.

State-of-the-art facilities keep patients occupied during long, and often grueling stays, whilst bringing teenagers with cancer together so they can support each other.
