Art Star No.40. ONLY THE SKY CAN DRAW OUR FREEDOM, 2010. Porexpan, fiber, acrylic and spraypaint on denim.

Born in Santander, street artist Oscar San Miguel Erice (Okuda) left for Madrid and a degree in Fine Art in 2000 and has been based in the city ever since. He cites everything from environmentalism to Mexicana (most notably Day of the Dead skulls) as influences, but is best known for his brightly-coloured surrealist works – a combination of carefully-portrayed parts that come together so that trees grow from bodies and figures have oranges or birdcages for heads. He has exhibited in galleries – and on walls – worldwide.

Questions & Answers

" What kind of art do you make?"

My works could be a mix between Surrealism & Pop. There are compositions with organic forms, human bodys, strange animals, colourfull patterns & geometric spaces...

" Where can I see it?"

www.okudart.es

" How do you feel about Polo Jeans Co.'s ART STARS project?"

I like the idea & the star’s surface. A 3D star & the briefing are good motivations to create ...and it is great to participate in the project with nice artists like Herakut, Delta, Case...

" Describe your finished ART STAR in a sentence?"

Only the sky can draw our freedom.

" What did you think when it first arrived at your studio?"

My studio is the higest open space of the building...and it looked like that the star came from the heavens...

" You were asked to use the Stars and Stripes for inspiration. How did you incorporate it into your star?"

A important part of my work are geometric forms & patterns... the star & stripes were perfect for my inspiration...

" What else inspired you?"

The idea of freedom, the life, the sky that is like near my studio, ...

" How did you find working with denim?"

It was like canvas... Because I put priming and made it work better...

" What processes did you use to create your piece?"

I used white priming, black background, painted the stars & stripes, painted the sky on the other side of the star, made the two small sculptures with porexpan and fiber, painted the sculptures...& joined the pencil & hand to the 3d star. Finished.

" What are you most proud of about the result?"

The final work impresses me more than the sketches ...& the mix of the paint with the sculptures...

" Describe your denim style..."

Super slim fit...

" Who else's star are you most looking forward to seeing and why?"

I think I saw some stars and the best for me was Delta star.

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren Art Stars

In January 2010, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren commissioned over 40 of Europe’s most exciting young contemporary artists to customise stars made from the finest American denim.

With the iconic Stars and Stripes flag for inspiration, each young artist was tasked with creating something totally unique: beyond the shapes and sizes of the Art Stars, the only limit was their imaginations...

Each Art Star will appear in a Polo Jeans Co. store, before joining a public exhibition in London in late 2010.

Contemporary art and fashion aficionados will have the opportunity to own one of these exclusive Art Stars.

All the stars created will be brought together in a public exhibition in London in late 2010 and auctioned in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people with cancer between the ages of 13-24.

Teenagers don’t stop being teenagers because they have cancer, which is why Teenage Cancer Trust builds specialist units in NHS hospitals, staffed by teenage cancer specialists.

These units are designed for and by young people and aim to give teenage cancer patients the very best chance of a positive outcome whilst being as close as possible to normal life.

State-of-the-art facilities keep patients occupied during long, and often grueling stays, whilst bringing teenagers with cancer together so they can support each other.
