Barcelona-based Castillo's unnerving canvases play with 21st-century ideas such as consumption, expansive foreign policy and extremist religion. Using the innocent iconography of childhood comics and fairytales, he creates a dark world full of hollow-eyed, Pinocchio-nosed characters, where the landscape seems imbued with constant apocalyptic fire and half-light, and where actions are violent and shocking. Originally from Chile, Castillo exhibits worldwide.
